Ruger BX Trigger Review (10/22)

Ruger BX Trigger Review (10/22)

Factory 10/22 triggers are usually around 4.75-6lbs so they’re one of the first things that many people choose to upgrade. Ruger makes their own upgrade trigger pack called the “Ruger BX Trigger” that features a trigger pull of around 2.5-3lbs.

Installation

Installation of the BX Trigger is extremely straight forward.

  1. Loosen the action screw so that you can remove the barreled action out of the stock.
  2. Push out the 2 pins holding the factory trigger pack in.
  3. Remove the factory trigger pack, out in the BX trigger pack
  4. Pop the pins back in
  5. Reinstall the barreled action in the stock, torque the action screw down to whatever setting you use.

Optional: replace or mod the BX trigger bolt hold open with an autobolt hold open before you install it. I would do this, because the autobolt mod makes the Ruger 10/22 a lot better.

BX trigger alternatives

The BX trigger is reasonably priced at around $100 and it does a great job of reducing the trigger pull by about half. Other alternatives include:

  • Volquartsen Hammer or hammer+sear: You can improve the factory trigger on the cheap by just choosing to replace the Ruger hammer & springs with VQ ones. This will get you to around 3 lbs for around $45 CDN vs $90 for the BX.
  • Kidd trigger, Timney Calvin, VQ2000: these aftermarket trigger packs are all around $200+, some offer adjustability, all can go lighter than 2.5 lbs.

Should you get a BX trigger? That depends what you want to do with it. To make a Ruger 10/22 easier for smaller kids to shoot, I really like it: it’s super quick to install and it takes the trigger to the exact weight I like. It’s also a good weight for some kinds of competition. It’s a simple, quick upgrade. The VQ hammer and spring kit option is cheaper and if you’re handy, they get you there for less money.

For those with a bit more money or for those who want an even lighter trigger or one that’s more adaptive, look no further than the Kids, Timney, and Volquartsen aftermarket triggers.

But, if you need a 2.5-3lb trigger in your Ruger, the BX trigger is a quick and easy upgrade.
